Description
Sitting lost and forgotten on a shelf, the faceplate of an old metal diving helmet holds imagery of the good old days and deep sea reverie.
More than 10 years ago I took a picture of this old diving bell helmet deep in the back rooms of an antique shop. I pulled out this photo from my archives and the thought struck me: what stories this helmet could tell and how does it feel to be forgotten and dusty just sitting on a shelf. The helmet had dreams of the sea. So, I knew then, I had to turn it into a painting where the brush stokes bring to mind the movement of water and that the faceplate would show an image of the sea with fishing swimming around. This photo painting is a composite of two of my photos put together to tell the tale of the forgotten diver’s helmet sitting on a shelf.
