Description
Late afternoon sunlight shimmers on the dome and minarets of the Henry B. Plant historic landmark located on the campus of the University of Tampa.
Originally called the Tampa Bay Hotel it was built by Henry B. Plant in 1891 as a lavish resort hotel. The Moorish Revival architectural theme was selected by Henry Plant because of its exotic appeal to widely traveled Victorians whom were his primary clientele. The hotel has six minarets, four cupolas, and three domes. The hotel closed during the Great Depression. The Tampa Municipal Museum (now called the Henry B. Plant Museum) was established by the city to preserve the hotel in its original form and co-exist with the newly established University of Tampa. It is now listed as a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
