Description
Escape Velocity is what you do when you receive very clear signals.
After I created A Star to Steer By, I wanted to create another space scene by using the rocket ship from an older piece that I did a few years back. Both pieces had their origins with this earlier piece done in 2011 found here (titled Sigma Sector 957) http://www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=954999
My skills at image processing and digital painting have improved much since that created 2011 piece.
The rocket ship is ....a pen!!! My husband got this really cool pen as a gift from a co-worker. I love how this pen looks like a 1950's spaceship. I took several photos of the pen for the Sigma original. The jet blasts are photos taken of July 4th sparklers and then warped digitally to get a directional flare. Taking the ship from the original I did some color adjustments so that the color tones more closely matches the scene in this piece.
The star field in the original 'Sigma' was nothing more than punching holes in a black poster board and photographed it with light shining on the back through the holes - closer inspection showed the holes were not perfect. So I made a new layer with a clean star-field that I created digitally.
Nebula clouds and Nebula gas - a photo of strong sunlight that outlines the clouds works beautifully for this. Photos with a different in-camera white balance setting to get blue tones in the exposure is best. I then did a color balance on it that brought out blue and reddish/purple hues. The quasar was created using several layers of the 'nebula' clouds that were warped into a spiral pattern. Beams and center glow was created digitally and then placed in separate layers to give depth and dimension. The larger stars are one photo I took of the sun and then made into different sizes and placed throughout.
